What was the curl for?

It follows from Stokes' Theorem (or the ``curl theorem''), which you may have seen in multivariable calculus, that the work done is independent of path if and only if $\nabla \times
\vec{F}=0$. This is an alternate way of stating the second criterion for a conservative force, and it can sometimes be convenient for quickly evaluating a force.
