Woman

Blue shadow and liner on little girl eyes
Concealing the truth in a shallow disguise
When caught through the smoke of a grey tavern gloom
Her glance is the promise of passionate doom.

Her image reflects the intrusion of sight
Her carriage, suggestive inflections of might
Soft curves over angles she models a pose
That urges and beckons from under her clothes.

Her bed is a desert of painted delight
Where inconstant clouds sometimes rain for the night
And a nude desolation in the clothes on the chair
Echoes her flesh from its spirit flayed bare.

The sheets lie a'rumpled, the pillowcase stained
By makeup that ran when the moment was feigned
And tears tore the mask that she wore on her eyes
Stripped naked the lady, hollow and wise.

The distance, forever; those aches in the dark
In search of the tender, to leave with no mark
Her heart seeks a knight that will last through the dawn
Her head knows the darkness will never be gone...
