In Defense of a Natural Religion

Back in the redly chaos of
before all time began
Back in the whimsey horror of
the nothingness of man
With Chasms yawning hungry for
the planting of the seed
Creation came in thunder
as always was decreed.

``Before all time? What nonsense!''
as the dribble on his chin
Belies his true allegiance to
the randomness of skin
``The pebble tossed into the tarn
occurs in time, you see,
And though the ripples outward run
they evermore shall be.''

How long is a line unbroken?
How loud a song unsung?
How far may the ripples outward glide
from a pebble yet unflung?
Before all was was nothing
and from nothingness, you see,
Can something come in time unless
there's something there to be?

Enough of rhyming riddles;
here's a question of intent
Before your birth where were you
and who asked for your consent
And when you die where will you be
and will the stars remain
To shine down in your absence
upon their cold domain?

Such questions do not matter
we can always close our eyes
And truth be told the answers
will always look like lies
For these posturings and questions
are part of a dark charade.
We act out all the answers
As we sing the soft parade.
