PHY 346:
Effective Field Theories and the Strong Interactions

Course Description

This course is aimed at advanced graduate students who wish to learn effective field theory and how it is applied to contemporary research problems in particle and nuclear physics. We will focus on effective field theories for hadronic physics and Quantum Chromodynamics but applications to other strongly interacting systems will be discussed when relevant.

Course Outline

  • Review of the Standard Model
  • Basics of Effective Field Theory
  • Low Energy QCD and Chiral Lagrangians
  • Heavy Particle Effective Theories
  • Effective Field Theory for Two-Body Systems
  • Soft-Collinear Effective Theory
  • Prerequisites:

    PHY 341, PHY 342
