From orr@physics.utoronto.ca Sun May 21 19:46:10 2006 Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 04:40:12 -0400 From: Robert S. Orr To: kotwal@phy.duke.edu Cc: william@physics.utoronto.ca, Robert S. Orr Subject: 2009 HCP Symposium Dear Ashutosh: Peter Jenni recently distributed your call for proposals to host HCP2009. I discussed this with colleagues in the University of Toronto particle physics group and we enthusiastically agreed to propose that HCP2009 be hosted by the University of Toronto. I notice that HCP2007 will be in Pisa and HCP2008 at CERN. So, it seems natural to us that 2009 should be in North America. The enthusiasm we have for hosting this meeting stems mainly from the fact that hadron collider physics is central to the work of our group. We have been long standing members of both CDF and ATLAS, and we believe that there will be many exciting results from the field at the end of this decade. Our Department also has a strong theory group who will support this proposal. We are confident that we have the resources to host such a meeting. Pekka Sinervo, Pierre Savard, David Baily and Richard Teuscher have expressed willingness to work on this. William Trischuk and myself are willing to make it our main activity in the necessary timescale. We would expect to have practical support from the staff of the University and the Department. In terms of financial support we would solicit that from the University of Toronto, the Faculty of Arts & Science, The Institute of Particle Physics of Canada, TRIUMF, the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and perhaps industrial sponsors. We are confident that we would come up with the necessary support. Recently, our Department hosted both Strings2005 and the 2nd North American ATLAS Physics Workshop. Both of these meetings were successful; we regard them as existence proofs that we can take on this task. Apart from the science program, we believe that participants found Toronto an interesting and congenial place to have a conference. I understand that William Trischuk is on the International Advisory Committee, and will attend the symposium. I am sure that he would be glad to discuss this proposal with you. Sincerely, Robert S.
