How to print out the lecture files.

The above PowerPoint lecture files are labeled by the date of the lecture, also with the chapter of the material. Assuming that the Microsoft PowerPoint program has been installed on your computer, clicking on the file name will download and display the file. I often edit my lecture files after giving the lecture to clarify some slides or to add answers to PRS questions so you should print out the slides a few days after the lecture if you want an "official" copy.

After a given lecture, answers to PRS questions will be added in the "Notes" box under the slide containing the PRS question. You have to tell PowerPoint to present the slide in "Normal" view to see the note box, which you can do by clicking on the menu "View" and submenu "Normal", or by clicking on the small "Normal view" icon at the far lower left of the PowerPoint screen. Occasionally, further information will be available in the notes for non-PRS slides also.

If you wish to print out a lecture file for taking notes in class or to read away from the computer, a good way to proceed is the following:

  1. In PowerPoint, click on the menu "File" and select the submenu "Print..." to print the lecture file.
  2. When the Print panel appears, look for the text box labeled "Print what:" in the lower left part of the Print panel. In the this text box, select the option "Handouts" by clicking on the downward pointing triangle to bring up a list of options (the default choice is "Slides").
  3. Just under the "Print what..." option is another textbox labeled "Color/grayscale:" In this box, select the option "Grayscale" (which I believe is the default). The black background of the slides will then be rendered white, the text black, and all images rendered in grayscale which will not use much ink from your printer.
  4. Finally, you can indicate how many slides you want printed to a page by changing the number in the entry "Slides per page:". The default is 6 slides per page but I would recommend changing this to 4 so that the slides are bigger and you have a bit more space to take notes on the page.
